Services Offered

Here, at Barrhaven Psychological Services, we offer a range of services  for children, adolescents, adults and couples. Our clinicians have received training in and use various treatment modalities  and the effectiveness of each of these treatment modalities are well supported by empirical research. Given that each treatment is specific to the area of concern, we will individualize the plan to fit your needs and goals.

Individual Counselling and Psychotherapy â€‹

Individual counseling and psychotherapy is a private and confidential process in which a person works one-on-one with a trained clinician to explore and address their personal challenges, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This form of counseling is focused on the individual's well-being and personal growth, allowing them to gain insights, develop coping strategies, and make positive changes in their lives.

After an assessment to determine diagnoses, areas of focus, and treatment goals, the treatment plan will be discussed with the client to ensure that it is a good fit. Treatment plans may change should new information be provided or if the clinical picture should change. Our clinicians are trained in the following evidence based modalities:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

  • Interpersonal Therapy

  • Behaviour Therapy

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

  • Emotion Focused Therapy

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

  • Mindfulness

  • Psychoeducation

  • Parenting coaching

Diagnostic Assessments

The purpose of diagnostic assessments is to determine the type and the severity of the symptoms that you are experiencing. Determining the type and severity of symptoms helps in deciding what kind of treatment will be beneficial. Diagnostic assessments are also important in establishing a baseline or snapshot of how you are doing prior to treatment in order to determine if treatment is effective. Typically diagnostic assessments include both self-report questionnaires, as well as a semi-structured interview with your clinician. Diagnostic assessments are used to make or clarify a diagnosis.

PLEASE NOTE that diagnostic assessments are conducted only by our psychologists.

PLEASE NOTE our clinicians are not trained to complete Custody and Access Assessments

Psychoeducational Assessments

The purpose of psychoeducational assessments is to determine the individual's level of intellectual functioning (i.e., IQ), cognitive strengths and weaknesses, academic abilities, academic strengths and difficulties, as well as their learning style. Psychoeducational assessments can be used to identify a range of learning difficulties, developmental delays, giftedness, and behavioural or emotional challenges (e.g., ADHD; Anxiety). Our clinic currently conducts psychoeducational assessments for children aged 6-16, both in English and in French.

Couples Counselling and Psychotherapy

Couple's counselling is a type of therapeutic intervention designed to help romantic partners address and work through challenges in their relationship. It involves meeting with a trained therapist who specializes in working with couples to explore and resolve issues that may be causing distress or strain in the relationship.

During couple's counselling sessions, the therapist acts as a neutral and impartial guide, creating a safe space for both partners to express their feelings and concerns openly. The goal is to improve communication, enhance understanding, and foster healthier ways of relating to one another.

Ultimately, couple's counselling is a collaborative process that empowers partners to work through difficulties together, fostering a more fulfilling and harmonious relationship. It is essential for both partners to be committed to the process and open to making positive changes for the therapy to be effective.
